Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of proprioceptor Neuromuscular Facilitation(PNF) applied to the upper extremity on the muscle activation of trunk extension. The healthy subjective(mean age of 21.6 years) participated in this study.
Methods : PNF pattern applied on the bilateral upper extremity in all subjects were bilateral flexion-abduction and bilateral flexion-adduction. Muscle activation in two patterns were measured in erector spinalis using surface EMG system. Each EMG value in individual muscle was normalizes for maximal voluntary isometric contraction. The data analyzed by independent t-test.
Result : The result was as following: The irradiation led to higher activation in the bilateral flexon-abduction than that of bilateral flexion-adduction pattern in erector spinalis(p<.05).
Conclusion : This result suggest that the application of PNF patterns to the bilateral upper extremity affect on muscle activation of trunk extensor. This machanism of irradiation effect might provide a help to the development of treatment method for affected side and functional improvement for the patient who have damages of central nervous system or musculoskeletal problem by arothropedic injury or low back pain(LBP).
